Jan Tallman , DVMOwner & Veterinarian
Years of Service: 32 Dr. Jan Tallman is a southeastern Iowa native, who grew up in Davis County and attended Cardinal Schools. She lived on a small farm and was her mother’s (the farmer in the family) number one chore girl, attending to the necessary creature comforts of sheep, cattle, horses, dogs and cats. There was always one milk cow on the farm, which Jan milked most evenings, to supply milk for the family and orphan lambs. After graduating from Cardinal in 1983, she attended Northeast Missouri State University. While at NMSU, Dr. Tallman participated in Army ROTC as a scholarship student and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1987. She also graduated from NMSU with a Bachelor of Science in Biology/ Pre-vet. Since Jan had announced to her mother at age 7 that she was going to be a veterinarian when she grew up, she applied to Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and was accepted. Thankfully the Army cooperated and granted an educational delay so she could attend Veterinary School.
The four years Dr. Tallman spent in Ames were both challenging and joyful. She loved learning and cherishes the friendships she made there. During that time Dr. Tallman reconnected with a childhood 4-H friend, James Klodt from northwest Wapello County and they were married in August 1990. She graduated from Iowa State in May 1991. Of course, the Army wanted their investment back and Dr. Tallman became CPT Tallman in October 1991. During her 5-year stint in the Army Veterinary Corps, CPT Tallman was stationed first at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, NE for 2 ½ yrs. She then moved to Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Puerto Rico for 2 ½ yrs. Puerto Rico was a bit of a culture shock for the Iowa farm girl but she quickly adjusted and learned to love snorkeling, sailing and the year round warm weather. While in Puerto Rico, CPT Tallman and James started their family with a beautiful baby girl, Alexandra. The day they returned to Iowa permanently with Alexandra they left 90-degree Puerto Rico to land in –26-degree wind chill Iowa nine hours later. Brrr. Dr. Tallman lazed around the house from February through March 1996 before starting at Eastview Animal Hospital in April 1996. She worked as an associate until purchasing half of the practice in January 1998. She currently lives in Ottumwa with her beautiful children Will, Zoe and Alexandra and husband, James. The family has two very spoiled dogs, Te' Amo and Hank, and two cats; Sassy and Magneto. Dr. Tallman loves working at Eastview. She loves meeting the clients and their pets and helping them with what they need to be happy and healthy for as long as possible. |
